DE-THATCHING
WHAT IS IT?
Thatch is a thin layer of dead grass and debris that can build up over time from over watering, over fertilizing or mowing too high. The thatch is located between the healthy blades of green grass and the grassroots. If the thatch is over a 1" thick, it may be time to de-thatch your lawn.
WHEN IS IT BAD FOR YOUR LAWN?
When the thatch is too thick, it prevents water and nutrients from seeping into the roots. Removing this will allow your lawn to stay thick and healthy.
WHEN SHOULD YOU DE-THATCH
The best time to de-thatch is when the air is cool, early spring and early fall.
WHEN SHOULDN'T YOU DE-THATCH?
If the thatch is 1/2" or less, you do not want to remove it as this amount of thatch is good for your lawn. It acts as a barrier to the heat and protects it against fluctuating moisture in the soil.
